ASX-listed First Graphene Limited announced the successful production of multi-kilogram quantities of graphene oxide at its Henderson facility in Western Australia.

This milestone underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and positions it for expanded commercial opportunities, First Graphene said in a media release.

Leveraging its existing manufacturing expertise, First Graphene identified a novel route to produce graphene oxide materials, utilising its established capabilities.

The resulting product is manufactured through a cost-effective, scalable, and repeatable process, ensuring consistency while minimising waste streams.

According to the company, graphene oxide, possessing high oxygen content, exhibits unique properties making it readily dispersible in water.

Its strength, flexibility, and porous nature, coupled with a high surface area, render it suitable for a wide range of applications including filtration and supercapacitors.

Recognising the market demand, First Graphene’s product targets various industries, with particular emphasis on water purification and desalination processes. Discussions with potential customers in these sectors are already underway.

Moreover, the versatility of graphene oxide extends its applicability to polar thermoplastic polymers like PVC, polyesters, and nylon, as well as aqueous coatings.

With the graphene oxide market projected to reach USD $2.7 billion by 2033, First Graphene is poised to capitalise on this burgeoning opportunity.

Furthermore, the application of graphene oxide in concrete further diversifies and enhances First Graphene’s product offerings, catering to the needs of cement and concrete clients globally.

Michael Bell, managing director and CEO of First Graphene, expressed enthusiasm over this achievement, stating, “The successful production of graphene oxide marks a major milestone for First Graphene, as we have created a high-demand material without incurring additional costs to the business.”

“The opportunities to deliver this new product to a raft of markets will bolster the Company’s commercialisation strategy which is growing from strength to strength.”

Bell further added, ”I look forward to providing further updates on our production of graphene oxide as it advances.”
