Visy, a packaging and resource recovery company, has unveiled a line of retail paper bags proudly made in Australia in a move towards reducing single-use plastic.

These sturdy bags, crafted from thicker paper with recycled content, are now gracing the shelves of stores nationwide, the company said in a news release.

Produced at Visy’s manufacturing facility in Reservoir, Melbourne, these bags underscore the company’s commitment to supporting local jobs and curbing plastic waste.

Fiona Macleod, Visy’s general manager Strategic Retail, emphasised the environmental benefits of the new paper bags.

“Our recyclable paper bags are a more sustainable back up for when you’ve forgotten your own reusable bags at home or need an extra one at checkout.”
Macleod highlighted the use of Australian materials and local manufacturing as key pillars in reducing reliance on single-use plastics.

“By using Australian paper and manufacturing the paper bags locally, we’re supporting local jobs in Australia and reducing our reliance on single use plastic,” the Visy official noted.

Once these paper bags fulfil their shopping duty, they can be easily recycled through standard kerbside bins, contributing to the circular economy.

Notably, the bags bear the Forestry Stewardship Council certification, signifying Visy’s commitment to responsible sourcing practices.

Visy, a long-standing advocate for sustainable packaging solutions, has been instrumental in powering the circular economy by integrating packaging, remanufacturing, and recycling processes.

With over 75 years of expertise and a workforce of 7,000 employees across 150 operations, Visy stands as a beacon of Australian innovation and environmental stewardship.

Through partnerships with councils and customers, Visy processes a significant portion of Australia’s kerbside recycling, diverting materials from landfills and mitigating emissions.

Beyond packaging and recycling, Visy offers integrated solutions for logistics, packaging supplies, and point-of-sale displays, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable business practices.
