The Australian Government has recently granted a $33 million contract to Albury-based company Australian Target Systems (ATS) in a bid to bolster smaller businesses and employment within the local defence sector.
Under the terms of the five-year agreement, ATS will supply cutting-edge live-fire target systems and deliver target support services at defence training ranges throughout Australia, the government said in a media release.
Additionally, the company will provide live-fire land target systems for Defence personnel to utilise during overseas deployments.
These advanced target systems play a crucial role in honing individual and collective combat shooting skills and are continually refined to enhance the realism of live-fire training exercises.
Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy stated that Australian Target Systems has served as a significant partner to the defence industry for an extended period, demonstrating a solid track record in supplying and maintaining target systems for the Australian Defence Force.
“This contract underscores the Albanese Government’s commitment to supporting Australia’s defence industry, and in particular working with smaller companies, to help them grow while also creating jobs for locals,” he noted.
Conroy further noted that the Defence Strategic Review acknowledges the critical role of the Australian defence industry in providing essential support to the ADF, as well as contributing to both the economy and regional stability.
ATS stands out as a wholly veteran-owned enterprise, already employing numerous veterans.
The contract’s implementation will not only safeguard 43 existing jobs but also pave the way for the creation of 11 additional positions at ATS, facilitating the company’s expansion and contributing to local employment opportunities.
