Funded by BNP Paribas and located about 280 kilometres due south of Port Hedland in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia, Roy Hill is a 55 million tonne per annum (Mtpa) project.

According to the official media release by Thiess, the contract with Samsung C&T includes construction of the structural, mechanical, piping, electrical and instrumentation works (SMPEI), currently being designed and supplied by Samsung.

“Thiess has established an industry-leading capability in SMPEI in the coal mining and CSG LNG sectors and we’re proud to further progress that capability with Samsung C&T in iron ore,” said Thiess Managing Director Bruce Munro.

According to Mr Munro, the new contract should be considered a stepping stone towards a new and strong relationship with Samsung C&T.

“We also have a long association with iron ore projects in the Pilbara and this contract represents a continuation with a new client,” said Mr Munro.

On-site works are scheduled to start in July; the new construction operation will require 1000 workers for 14 months.
