The Australian Government has announced a $4 million investment to revamp the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) Base Amberley near Ipswich in Queensland to boost the nation’s sovereign air combat capability.
The funding will support the fleets that are housed in RAAF Base Amberley by delivering an upgrade to the site’s external fuel tank workshop, communications support works, and electrical repairs and maintenance works.
The upgrades will support fuel quality testing for the RAAF’s F/A-18F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler fleets and enhance electrical infrastructure and deliver-base infrastructure in support of deployable ICT communications equipment.
“The Albanese Government recognises that our Defence sites must be equipped to meet operational and capability requirements, now and in the future,” said Assistant Minister for Defence Matt Thistlethwaite.
Work has already begun in Amberley and is expected to result in the creation of over 100 Queensland jobs, providing significant opportunities for local trades, construction, and other businesses, including promoting the participation of Indigenous companies.
“We will continue to invest in foundational estate and infrastructure, which is critical to the capacity of our Defence Force to keep Australians safe,” Minister Thistlethwaite added.
