Paper and packaging company Opal has opened a new manufacturing facility in Logic Wodonga, supporting the creation of more than 400 new jobs in Victoria.

Located along Hume’s freight corridor, the new $140 million manufacturing site will produce recycled and recyclable boxes and packaging to meet increased demand from businesses looking for sustainable packaging options.

The new facility was designed with sustainability at its centre, powered using solar and rainwater harvesting.

More than 450 workers were hired at the peak of construction.

Opal is a part of the Nippon Paper Group and is one of the largest paper and packaging manufacturers in Australia in New Zealand.

“Logic Wodonga is on track to becoming a major hub for the manufacturing, transport and supply chain industries,” said Minister for Regional Development Gayle Tierney.

“Our support for the new Opal facility in Wodonga will create new jobs and make it easier for local companies to do business right here in Victoria.”

The new manufacturing facility adds to Victoria’s $33 billion manufacturing industry, which comprises 24,000 businesses, supporting more than 260,000 jobs and $23.9 billion in exports.

“By investing in facilities like Opal, we are backing the region’s capability to compete domestically and internationally. Projects like these keep Wodonga thriving as a manufacturing hub and create more jobs,” said Jaclyn Symes, Member for Northern Victoria Region.

The project is part of the Victorian government’s record investment of more than $41 billion in rural and regional Victoria since 2015.
