Huggies Australia has launched a first-of-its-kind innovation, Huggies Newborn and Infant nappies, featuring a zinc-enriched layer that has been clinically proven to safeguard a baby’s delicate skin against irritation.

The global manufacturer said that according to research, this development is set to alleviate the top concern of almost two in three Australian parents, who worry about their baby’s skin irritation, such as nappy rash.

In a survey conducted among 1,000 Australian parents with children aged 0-5 years old, it was revealed that 62 per cent of parents consider baby skin irritation to be their primary concern, surpassing worries about sleeping with 53 per cent and feeding with 49 per cent.

These findings shed light on the lengths to which Aussie parents are going to protect their newborns’ skin, including significant financial investments and sleepless nights.

The research indicates that 86 per cent of parents whose newborns have experienced skin irritation have spent an average of $405 on preventive measures and treatments.

Furthermore, 41 per cent of parents admitted to losing sleep due to their baby’s skin irritation, while 38 per cent reported feeling stressed, 35 per cent uncertain about what’s considered normal, and 34 per cent concerned that the issue might be more serious.

HUGGIES has harnessed the science behind zinc-based barrier creams, long used by dermatologists to protect a baby’s skin from irritation, to create a nappy that actively shields the delicate skin of newborns.

This zinc-enriched layer is a unique feature not found in any other nappy on the market, ensuring parents get the trusted comfort and absorbency they know and love while addressing their top concerns.

HUGGIES Newborn nappies have maintained their position as the number one choice for Australian hospitals and have received an official endorsement from The Australian College of Midwives (ACM).

Dr Deshan Sebaratnam, a paediatric skin dermatologist engaged by Huggies, explained, “The environment inside a nappy is the perfect recipe for skin irritation, which can be distressing for babies and make nappy changes uncomfortable. Dermatologists have been using zinc-based barrier creams for decades to help protect a baby’s skin from irritation and re-establish the barrier function of the skin.”

Gabrielle Davidson, Kimberly-Clark ANZ Marketing Director, who is also a mother of two, emphasized the significance of this innovation: “At Huggies, we want parents to feel confident when it comes to protecting their baby against skin irritation.”

She continued, “That’s why we’re extremely proud to launch Australia’s first zinc-enriched nappy designed in Australia for Australian babies. It provides better-than-ever protection on top of the trusted comfort, breathability, and absorbency we’re known for.”

She expressed her confidence that this innovation will contribute to parents’ peace of mind regarding their baby’s delicate skin.

Alison Weatherstone, from the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) Midwifery Team, stated, “The Australian College of Midwives endorses Huggies® Nappies and Huggies Baby Wipes as the preferred choice for baby.”

The new HUGGIES Newborn and Infant nappies are now available at participating retailers across the country, with a starting price of RRP $22 for bulk packs.
