Australian startup The Boxed Beverage Company has teamed up with food and beverage packaging giant Tetra Pak for the launch of Waterbox, a sustainably-packaged alkaline water sourced from Cottonwood Springs in Victoria.

With Tetra Pak’s plant-based carton bottle, Waterbox is intended to have up to eight times less impact on climate change than traditional bottled water packaged with polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Consumers can recycle the plant-based carton bottle at kerbside collection points, where they will be transported to saveBOARD recycling facility and remanufactured into sustainable building materials for homes and offices.

The Boxed Beverage Company, which was founded by two Adelaideans, created Waterbox to address the growing customer demand in Australia for sustainably packed and locally sourced products with a lower environmental impact.

“We are very excited to be launching our first product, Waterbox. We have seen Aussie consumers seek more sustainable, on-the-go alternatives to traditionally-packaged beverages, and Waterbox represents our first step in addressing this demand and empowering consumers to make a difference,” said Stefanie Mazzone, director of the company.

“Working with our partner Tetra Pak, we are also very proud to be able to source, process and package the product right here in Australia, further ensuring we are able to cater to Australians’ focus on health and sustainability,” Mazone added.

“Tetra Pak is always looking for like-minded partners with shared goals and visions when it comes to bringing exciting product innovations into the market, as well as advancing local circular economy. We are thrilled to partner with a homegrown, challenger brand like The Boxed Beverage Company in bringing a new product into the Australia’s beverage industry with our innovative and sustainable plant-based Tetra Top packaging,” said Boris Munster, managing director of Tetra Pak Australia and New Zealand.

Waterbox (500 ml) is available in selected Foodlands, Romeo’s and IGA outlets in South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, and New South Wales.
