Germany-headquartered Dimensionics Density has commercially introduced an automated density determination technology for additive manufacturing (AM), with a particular focus on the validation of AM parts.

In a press release, the company stated that the density determination solution is a metrological system designed for the rapid and highly accurate density determination of components, which is especially useful for analysing AM-produced parts.

Because porosity in AM parts can impair their mechanical strength, stability, and longevity, density determination is particularly crucial, the company said.

Thus, to attain great accuracy, Dimensionics said it combines the Archimedean principle with automation technologies and precise scales.

The system is said to be entirely automated, and integrated measurement and control systems monitor measurements to take environmental factors into consideration.

According to Phillipp Pruesse, head of sales at Dimensionics, automation must be implemented throughout the entire AM process chain if AM is to continue challenging the status quo of manufacturing.

“Our technology plays straight into the need for automation in the area of validation and quality control of AM parts, and we have launched an array of tools focused on the determination of AM part density,” Pruesse remarked.

Because of this, according to Pruesse, the company’s density determination systems are fully automated and, crucially, created to be used in production settings as well as laboratories.

“Dimensionics Density’s solutions can easily determine the density of freeform parts and highly complex AM parts can measure density repeatability to 0.001 g/cm3,” the company official further explained.

Porosity in 3D-printed items, according to the company, can be an issue since it can impair mechanical strength and stability, reduce durability, and make them more susceptible to failure under stress.

It can also have an effect on the parts’ thermal and electrical qualities, making them less resistant to high temperatures, corrosives, and other environmental variables.

To address this issue, Pruesse stated that Dimensionics offers a universal carrier that can transport most items and that is simple to alter if necessary for more complex geometries.

“With a cycle time of less than 2 minutes per component and the possibility of inspecting up to 18 components simultaneously in one inspection process as standard, the Dimensionics Density solution supports the optimisation and efficiency of manufacturing processes.”
