Kongsberg Defence Australia has selected Adelaide-based Tandem Building Group to undertake the design and construction of a new facility in Mawson Lakes, South Australia that will specialise in manufacturing products and developing software for defence programs.
The SA government said the 2500 sqm site will be home to hardware manufacturing and assembly, along with maintenance and software development to assist in the delivery of defence acquisition projects.
Kongsberg Defence Australia, a local subsidiary of the Norwegian-based global technology company Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace, has invested $15 million in South Australia to expand its globally recognised operations.
The company supports the local manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing of the C4 system for the Australian Army’s National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System capability, which is currently being produced by Raytheon Australia.
At any stage of development, the project will support between 70 and 130 jobs on site, with approximately 30 South Australian companies involved, according to a news release.
Local businesses include the Parkside design boutique Section Six Architects and the Adelaide engineering consultants Norman Disney & Young.
Florey member Michael Brown MP expressed his excitement about the project, saying the local community is also delighted to see the commencement of the initiative.
“This global company’s investment in our area strengthens a wider confidence in Mawson Lakes as a perfect base for manufacturing,” Brown said.
Kongsberg Defence Australia general manager John Fry noted that the construction of the 2,500 sqm facility marks a significant milestone for Kongsberg’s defence business in Australia.
Nick Riddell, Tandem Building Group operations manager, said the company is appreciative of the chance to be a part of the project.
“Tandem Building Group is extremely grateful for the opportunity to be involved in this exciting and meaningful project, and we are looking forward to collaborating with Kongsberg Defence Australia to deliver the first of their purpose-built facilities in the country,” Riddell stated.
Work on site has commenced, with plans for the facility to be fully occupied and operational by early 2024.
