The McGowan Government has committed $15 million to the “Charge Up Workplace Grant” as part of its plan to increase the amount of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in Western Australia.
Announced by Energy Minister Bill Johnston, the EV package will offer up $3.75 million in the initial round to cover around half the costs of buying and installing charging stations and associated software.
The grants are expected to target not-for-profit organisations, small and medium businesses, and local government authorities.
In particular, 50 per cent of the cost of up to four Level Two EV chargers (7 to 22kW AC) per site, for up to five locations, will be covered by round one funds.
A maximum grant value of $50,000 per approved applicant will apply in metropolitan areas, with a maximum value of $75,000 in regional and remote areas in recognition of the higher installation costs.
The EV package will also cover 75 per cent of the cost of a two-year smart charging software subscription.
“The program will fund EV chargers in the workplace and at destinations where people typically spend time during the day, for example, carparks, hospitality businesses, tourist attractions, parks and beaches,” said Minister Johnston.
“The program prioritises daytime charging, which will enable EV owners to charge up from the abundant solar energy that powers the grid when the sun is shining,” the minister continued.
He also encouraged companies, local governments, and individuals working for not-for-profit organisations to think about how the grant can be used to fund EV charging infrastructure that will benefit their operations and clients.
The Charge Up Workplace Grant Program is part of a $60 million 2022-23 State Budget commitment to promote EV uptake.
The grant program will be administered by the Energy Policy WA Group within the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety in accordance with established grant administration protocols.
Round One grant applications open on 16 February 2023 and close on 12 May 2023.
