World-Class NSW + ACT Work celebrated at Weld Australia’s 2022 Welding Excellence Awards

Craftsmanship, quality and professionalism were front and centre last night, with the winners of the 2022 New South Wales and ACT Welding Excellence Awards announced in Sydney.

Weld Australia’s Excellence Awards are the most prestigious event on the welding industry calendar. The Awards showcase and celebrate the world-class work being undertaken by local welders, fabricators and industry educators.

According to Weld Australia’s CEO, Geoff Crittenden, “Weld Australia’s 2022 Welding Excellence Awards celebrate the incredible work of Australia’s welders and fabricators. The Awards recognise and reward professionals whose dedication, skill, and teamwork speak for themselves.”

 “This year’s winners from New South Wales and the ACT feature businesses and people committed to the pursuit of innovative, sustainable solutions that minimise risk and maximise project outcomes, as well as initiatives designed to increase the breadth and depth of skilled labour within the welding sector,” Crittenden said.

S&L Steel won the 2022 Project of the Year Award for Allianz Stadium Roof. Located in the heart of Sydney’s thriving sport, entertainment and hospitality precinct, the new world-class Allianz Stadium was designed to create an unrivalled experience for spectators, athletes, and entertainers. Based in Western Sydney, S&L Steel was fabricated the stadium roof which consisted of a tension ring located on the outside perimeter, four derricks which support the roof in the four corners and ten truss sections that are complemented by the diagrid – a combination of RHS and CHS members. Congratulations also to DBC Group for Maintenance Work on the Deep Space Station 43 Antenna as the 2022 Runner Up.

MC Quality Control won the 2022 Company of the Year Award – Fabrication. Established in 2015, MC Quality is committed to growing and supporting the welding industry long-term. In 2022, MC Quality Control has expanded, with a team of 27 welding professionals and administration staff. The company has invested significantly in its team, consistently delivering improvements in quality for its customers, and opportunities for its people. These investments have been essential as their business continues to expand into a diverse range of sectors including manufacturing, engineering, maintenance project management, renewable energy, rail and mining.

The NSW Department of Education won the 2022 Training and Education – Organisation Award. The NSW Department of Education introduced a new program in 2019 designed to boost interest from secondary students in manufacturing and engineering courses. The WELD Hub Manufacturing program provides students with access to augmented reality welding simulators. With 80 simulators installed in 40 schools, the program is delivering exceptional results. Congratulations also to Glencore Coal Assets Australia as the 2022 Runner Up.

Other 2022 Welding Excellence Award winners included:

  • BOC Gas & Gear (Lismore) received the 2022 Company of the Year Award – Gas and Gear.
  • Michael Cameron from MC Quality Control was named the 2022 Welding Professional of Year – Welding Coordinator. Congratulations also to Alan Kelly from Hifab Services as the 2022 Runner Up.
  • Sungmook (AKA Mac) Park from TSS Engineering was named the 2022 Welding Professional of Year – Welding Supervisor.
  • Mark Lamb-Crane from MC Quality Control was named the 2022 Welding Professional of Year – Welding Inspector. Congratulations also to David Mitchell from MC Quality Control as the 2022 Runner Up.
  • Arnekin Loftus from Formula Offroad was named the 2022 Young Trades Person of the Year. Congratulations also to Michael Labb from Empire Industrial Engineering as the 2nd Runner Up and Todd Methvan from DBC Group Australia as the 1st Runner Up for 2022.
  • Alan Bailey from Central Coast Community College received the 2022 Training and Education – Individual Teacher Award. Congratulations also to Riccardo De Francesco from TAFE NSW as the 2022 Runner Up.
  • Jason Elias from Precision Metal Group received the 2022 CEO’s Award for the Welding Professional of the Year.
