The Western Australian Government has announced a $10 million grant for Woodside Energy’s proposed Hydrogen Refueller @H2Perth project in an effort to help drive the uptake of hydrogen-fuelled vehicles.

The project will establish a renewable hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling plant at the company’s H2Perth site in the Rockingham Industry Zone with matching funds from Woodside Energy.

It will support BGC and Centurion, which are working with Woodside Energy, in their early deployment of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

While Centurion will buy and operate two hydrogen prime movers, BGC will buy and run five to ten hydrogen fuel cell concrete agitator trucks. Woodside Energy also intends to lease and refuel two Hyundai Nexo vehicles at the refuelling facility.

According to the Government’s statement, Woodside Energy’s public refuelling station is expected to open in the second half of 2024, pending all required permissions.

Premier Mark McGowan said the Hydrogen Refueller @H2Perth project was selected from more than 20 expressions of interest submitted for the WA Government’s Hydrogen Fuelled Transport Program, which aims to accelerate the uptake of hydrogen-fuelled transport, build local skills and capability, and stimulate local production of renewable hydrogen.

“Woodside Energy’s H2Perth facility provides a huge opportunity to accelerate the uptake of hydrogen-fuelled vehicles in Western Australia,” the Premier added.

“This project will not only stimulate demand for local production of renewable hydrogen but also help our State move towards a clean energy future and reach net zero by 2050.

“The facility will give local manufacturing in the south metropolitan region a boost and create thousands of local jobs within the construction, manufacturing and renewable energy sectors.”

Industry Minister Alannah MacTiernan said hydrogen vehicles are an exciting opportunity for WA when it comes to zero-emission transport.

“By investing in ventures like Woodside Energy’s proposed Hydrogen Refueller @H2Perth project, the WA Government is helping to make sure Western Australia is an early adopter of this new technology,” the Minister said.

“Through its collaboration with BGC and Centurion, Woodside Energy will help lay the groundwork for the use of hydrogen vehicles in the heavy transport industry – in WA and beyond.

“The development of a hydrogen-fuelled transport system supports the WA Government’s commitment to transition Western Australia to net zero emissions by 2050, and the creation of new sustainable jobs in a growing industry.”
