The Victorian government has launched a 10-year plan that seeks to ensure the state is equipped with the workforce, institutions, and scientific innovations needed to be a world leader in the field of medical research.
The plan was detailed in the state labour government’s Health and Medical Research Strategy: 2022- 2032, which seeks to enhance Victoria’s research capabilities and commercial opportunities, support researchers and mitigate health challenges on a global scale.
Announced recently by Innovation, Medical Research, and the Digital Economy Minister Jaala Pulford, the strategy places a heavy focus on talent, collaboration, big ideas, and generating outcomes.
The plan aims to expand Victoria’s capability to find new public health solutions and support novel technologies to improve health outcomes, according to a media statement issued by the state government.
The research strategy, which is built on Victoria’s track record of achievements in medical research, was developed in consultation with the state’s health and medical research sector and follows Victoria’s Health and Medical Research Strategy 2016-2020.
The government has invested more than $1.3 billion in the sector, which is one of Victoria’s most significant and productive industries. According to the press release, every dollar invested in the research sector generates $3.90 of activity in the state’s economy.
“Victorians should be so proud of the people who work in this sector and can be assured over the next 10 years we will see some incredible discoveries happen right here in Victoria,” said Pulford.
“A healthy community relies on creating an environment where our researchers have the tools they need to bring their discoveries to life — whether in the clinic, hospital or home.”
