Safer Storage Systems (SSS), an Australian Pallet Racking manufacturer and storage solutions provider, has recently developed Silverline Racking which helps cut down on CO2 emissions by more than 85% when compared to relative sources shipped from Europe or Asia*.

Silverline Racking is a premium pallet racking option which has been developed with a sustainable lifecycle in mind – this includes careful consideration of the materials used, the manufacturing process, as well as the environmental impact of associated freight.

SSS Silverline racking is made of high-quality, high-tensile steel making it hardwearing and ideal for re-use in future projects. Steel is a resource that can be recycled infinitely and has one of the highest recycling rates of any material^.

Additionally, the Silverline range offers the first galvanised beam of its type and construction to the Australian market.

Safer Storage Systems Managing Director, Matt Bell says, “Making the switch to galvanised beams was a significant step in designing a more sustainable pallet racking product. The zinc galvanising process is a highly efficient process which is completed in-line by the steel manufacturer and leads to minimising CO2 output. We know that reducing waste and CO2 consumption is an effective way to conserve natural resources and produce less greenhouse emissions.”

The pre-galvanised zinc coating used is lead-free and has a minimum content of 99% zinc, which is completely recyclable. This means that the zinc can be stripped from the racking and recycled at the end of its life.

Coating the beams in zinc rather than a powder coat, like other pallet racking brands available in Australia, offers savings of around 80% of CO2 per pallet space when directly comparing the zinc coating process to the energy intensive powder coating process. It is also important to note that powder coat is also not recyclable and becomes waste, contributing to the global landfill crisis.

Another key factor in reducing the carbon emissions for SSS Silverline racking is that it is manufactured locally – eliminating associated overseas freight emissions and not to mention supporting the Australian manufacturing industry.

“Safer Storage Systems has partnered with Gonvarri Material Handling (GMH) – one of Europe’s leading forces in engineering and manufacturing of storage solutions having helped some of the world’s major brands and pioneering SMEs since 1856. This partnership has secured Safer Storage Systems the exclusive rights to manufacture the GMH P90+ range of pallet racking here in Australia,” says Matt.

Overseas freight emissions could represent 17% of global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, According to transportenvironment.org**.

As an example, a project imported from Europe with 10,000 pallet locations produces around 47 Tonnes of carbon emissions from the pallet racking manufacturing and international freight components. To put this in perspective, it would take 2392 trees to be planted (growing for one year) to offset the emissions from this one project. That’s one tree for every 4 pallet spaces installed!

When compared to SSS Silverline Racking, the emissions are reduced to just 5.4 tonnes of CO2 emitted for the equivalent project – requiring 268 trees (growing for one year) to absorb the CO2 to offset 10,000 pallet locations. That’s over 85% in reduction of CO2 emissions.

“Safer Storage Systems aspires to operate sustainably and impactfully and is proud to offer Aussie businesses a more sustainable racking option for their storage facilities and is passionate about growing Australia’s manufacturing presence.”

“It’s not the end of our sustainability goals – we consider the environment and the communities in which we operate as key stakeholders of our business and continue to refine and improve our organisation’s sustainability practices help leave our world in better shape for future generations,” Matt adds.

Safer Storage Systems has also developed a calculator to check the CO2 emissions of existing or future pallet racking projects – visit www.saferstoragesystems.com.au
