3D Systems to launch professional 3D printers capable of creating edible geometric forms

3D Systems has long been admired for their innovativeness and capability to stun the world with some unique product and service every now and then. In keeping with this tradition, the company has recently unveiled the world’s first 3D food printers at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

An article featured on My Modern Me reveals that the Chefjet and Chefjet Pro are both capable of producing a broad range of delicious, edible candies in multiple 3D geometric forms. The candies come in many different flavours, such as chocolate, vanilla, mint, sour apple, cherry and watermelon.

Moreover, the Chefjet and Chefjet Pro are also perfectly capable of making both monochromatic (Chefjet) or full-colour (Chefjet Pro) edible candies and various cake toppers.

Both the Chefjet and Chefjet Pro are intended for the professional baker and restaurant chef, or, in other words, the printers are more suited for use in a professional environment rather than at home.

“The machine uses an ink jet print head that’s just like the one you would find in your desktop 2D printer. It spreads a very fine layer of sugar then paints water onto the surface of the sugar, and that water allows the sugar to recrystallize and harden to form these complex geometries,” said Liz von Hasseln, 3D Systems’ Creative Director Food Products.

According to the article on Slashgear, Chefjet and Chefjet Pro will be available on the market in the second half of 2014. The total cost of Chiefjet will average a little less than $5,000, while the Chefjet Pro will be available for a little under $10,000.
