The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has officially launched the first phase of its $1 billion Solar Sunshot program, aimed at fostering innovation in Australia’s solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing industry.
This initiative, announced by the Australian Government in March, marks a significant step in strengthening Australia’s role in the solar sector, the agency said in a news release.
ARENA CEO Darren Miller highlighted the program’s importance for Australia’s energy future.
“Solar electricity will be the foundation of Australia’s future energy supply and the key to our net zero and renewable energy superpower ambitions,” Miller said.
“We need to build on our history of innovation and extend this into manufacturing across the solar supply chain. The demand for solar required to meet our net zero and renewable energy superpower goals is immense, and Australia has the opportunity to build resilience and unlock long-term economic opportunity,” he explained.
The Solar Sunshot program features two funding rounds, with a combined total of $550 million available.
Round 1A, with an allocation of $500 million, will focus on supporting innovation in solar PV manufacturing, including advancements in modules, module inputs, and deployment systems.
Round 1B will offer $50 million to fund solar PV manufacturing studies, such as feasibility and engineering studies.
ARENA’s role as Australia’s renewable energy innovation agency positions it to spearhead significant advancements in solar manufacturing.
Miller emphasised, “Australia is a recognised leader in solar research and deployment, and this gives us the opportunity to play a greater role in manufacturing.”
The Solar Sunshot program aims to leverage Australia’s strong renewable energy potential, abundant raw materials, and excellence in research and development to strengthen and diversify its solar supply chains and create new economic opportunities.
The program guidelines were developed in collaboration with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), industry stakeholders, and other key players.
Applications for the program are now open, and ARENA will host an information webinar for potential applicants in the coming weeks.

ARENA said it anticipates announcing additional funding rounds for the Solar Sunshot Program starting mid-2025.
